“Not Your Average Boundaries” LeaderWise Training

facilitated by Rev. Sarah Lammert

Wednesday 10a-12p, 1:30-3:30p and Thursday 10a-12p - 6 hours

Welcome to LeaderWise’s boundaries training, where we believe that boundaries training doesn’t have to be boring! It’s our experience at LeaderWise that pastors, church staff, and other leaders who transgress boundaries by-and-large are not predators. In fact, not even close. Most people in ministry who violate boundaries are individuals who know and follow the rules most of the time, but whose judgment may be impaired due to an unusually stressful time in their lives.

With that in mind, Not-Your-Average Boundaries Training is tailored to focus on strategies to foster mental health, emotional resiliency, and well-being. While we still cover the essentials around professional ethics, we believe the best prevention is to encourage clergy to take steps to manage their stress to maintain balance and perspective when temptation arises.

The workshop is lively and highly interactive, full of reflection and conversation—and even laughter. Attendees have given us the feedback that our boundaries training was a great experience, AND caused them to re-evaluate some of their own practices.

For the New England UUMA Chapter, we’ll combine this core training with a tailored module called the “Self-Differentiated Leader.” Self-differentiated leaders lead through their principles, values, and beliefs, and by doing so can stand against the anxiety that is present in systems today. Living in this turbulent, argumentative, my-way-or-the-highway society wears on us all. Having the ability to withstand pressures others place on us, as well as to right-size our own expectations, leads to healthier leaders, healthier relationships, and healthier systems.

NOTES

*This training fulfills the expectation of the UUMA for active members to take a boundaries/ethics course once every 3 years. Even if you’ve done boundaries training in the past, it is a best practice to revisit this topic and deepen our learning about it, which is the practice of a lifetime.

**There will be some pre-retreat reading materials and a short video from Sarah sent out ahead of retreat. There will be an opportunity to watch the video with the group on Tuesday evening at the retreat.
