For our program, Rev. Amy writes:
“After the Presidential election of 2016, then Covid, and current authoritarianism, we can all learn how to be happier, more resilient, and better leaders when we are trauma-informed, regarding ourselves and those we serve. The sessions will not be therapy, but will help us breathe easier, coming away with affirmation and resources. During my time in Elkhart, I served on a panel with local educators as their parent / clergy group member. From attending national workshops about equity, I learned about trauma-informed education. We focused on how to build equity into programs full of traumatized people, both students and their leaders. You learn to see people and situations differently when your focus is providing people with what they need to succeed. Personally, my own therapy is cognitive based therapy, with an emphasis on trauma. Having transitioned my therapist to a life coach / ministry mentor, we have focused on leading congregations through traumatic times. Trauma-informed ministry was also a focus of my Transitional Ministry class, clarifying what we can be doing as traumatized leaders to help traumatized people. I currently serve the coastal Maine congregation in Castine, and am married to our colleague, Kevin DeBeck. As a UU professional I have served in various capacities from Hospice Chaplain, DRE, interim, summer minister, and as contract and called lead minister. I have served in VA, PA, Maine, and Indiana. Having been in your chapter for 14 years, it will be a pleasure to return and share some resources with you. I will be referencing the book, What Happened to You – Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing. I highly recommend it!”
If you have any questions about the retreat, please feel free to reach out to any of chapter leaders. We look forward to seeing you!
