Good Offices Training: Legal Considerations for Good Offices People
Wednesday, February 12, 12-1pm ET/ 11am-12pm CT/ 10-11am MT/ 9-10am PT

In our 2024 revision to the Good Offices Handbook, we clarify the boundaries within which Good Offices can be offered.  One of those limits is legal.  Good Offices people “are not authorized to act as legal agents or representatives of any minister nor are they able to offer legal counsel or any advice beyond the scope of their role.”

Our UUMA attorney, James E. Grumbach, helped us craft that statement and will present at this session on legal considerations for Good Offices People.  Jim will address things Good Offices people ought keep in mind:

  • when ministers have criminal or civil complaints against them

  • when ministers are considering filing a civil suit of their own

  • when ministers may need to seek independent legal advice

  • when Good Offices people recognize a situation is beyond the capability of themselves, colleagues and support personnel

After that we’ll have time for Q&A.  Holding a training like this may be new for Good Offices and we trust your questions will help us clarify what needs to be included in future versions of this training.
